GT or a JD would be fine in a 55 for life.

Get a female GT. They tend to be smaller, usually less than 8".

Nemesis529 had the best idea I've heard so far. Get a female of either GT or JD. I've seen some huge male JD's that wouldn't have felt comfortable in a 55 g and I know the male GT I used to have was a brute by 9 months, no way he'd have fit in a 55 g for life.
But a female....what a perfect idea. They're a lot smaller and are just as colorful.

not a bad idea . . . a female JD or GT would at least not get as big as the males

I'm gonna suggest Blue Acara . . . very similar color-scheme to a GT, but will not get much bigger than 6-7", would have plenty of room in a 55G . . . heck, you could even get a pair of 'em . . .

I wouldnt get anything listed above except the salvini. GTs can get too big, JD's are skittish and hide a lot.

Id get any combo of these, as they stay under a foot (except in rare cases for the RTMs):

Grammodes
Female RTM
Female Carpintis
Female Cyano
F1 Convicts
Salvinis
HRP colony

What's better? that's a tough question, it's up to the indiviual - personally I like both. Having said that, I love my GT.

if grammodes can live in a 55 for life i would def get that,but seems to be a split some say yes and some say no,same for the cuban can it be done?? if so get one of them.
