I was originally planning on running two Aquaclear 110 and a Rena XP3 on my 125g. Would running 2 canisters be a better choice?

One canister, one biowheel works best for me.

Personally I like the heavily planted with 2 canisters! :D

Biggest question I have is what is the stock going to be like? That will dictate what kind of canister would be the best choice.

If the tank is not planted (ie, no CO2 injection) and you're after maximum flow rate and mechanical filtration, the 2 HOB's with 1 canister is good. I ran 2 canisters with a HOB for a while on my 125 (AC500, XP3, Eheim 2028), but have since replaced the XP3 and AC with an FX5 because I am injecting CO2. If you want more flow rate and only want canisters, considering coupling the XP3 with an FX5. I am very happy with mine.

Sorry I should of mentioned what was going in it. The tank will be non planted, have 2 or 3 bichirs, oscar, flathead bullhead (if I can find one) and maybe another smaller to medium size cichlid.

I like canisters better than HOT. However, you can beat the bang-for-your-buck of the workhorse, aquaclear 110. (I use the combo of both.)

Well I decided I'm going to get two XP3's, before I finalize the order should I buy additional media or is the media that comes with it sufficient?
