WHICH WOULD YOU BUY????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is easy, and I can help you out. I have babies available. It is hands down Hoga's. I have all of them on your list, they are all beautiful fish. But the one with the most personality is my Hoga, hands down.

How big do hogaboomorum get

It depends on what you want from your fish... If you want personality and owner responsive then go with a Trimac or Hog. if you want color get Istlanum. Its mostly a personal choisce cause for me the Hogs dont do it, Id rather keep a Trimac which i have and those are my favorite amphilophus. I also have Red Istlanum, ive had a wild pair, which were phenominal!! and i never should have sold. now i have F2's from Gmfishnuts original pair that im going to be pairing off with eachother and an F1 from my old wild pair and and F1 pair as well. And see its all my opinionand why i love both and would keep both:) but never in the same tank together;)

But really it also depends on whats available, the quality and who your getting these fish from. where would you be getting these from?

Trimac...I have one and wouldn't trade him for anything!!!

Hoga's reach about 12". Some sources say 10-12" My 2 males are 10" & 12". The reason I say Hoga over the others is that they are IME a lot less aggressive than the Trimac, Istlanum, and Grammode. Mine hold their own because of their size, but when it comes down to it, they gladly step aside and either share that top dog spot or give it up.

Im sure you have seen pics of them, but here are mine.

i have one of them. what will do best with a grammodes, festae, and cuban all are babies around 2 inches
Depends what your going for and what size tank you have and if you have a spare tank to house those that don't comm. well. If your going for a community your already gonna be challenged keeping the stock you already have successfully. Grammodes and Festae can be pretty intense tankmates and even Cubans can get vicious keeping them longterm together will either be hit or miss. Unfortunately more likely than not a miss unless you've got a huge aquarium so they can some what claim a territory or some others have had success with over-stocking. Of your choices you gave Lyonsi and Hog's are probably the most easy to comm. Though they will probably catch a beat down from either your Grammode or Festae unless you get one that's fairly larger than the other 2 and even then it's just buying time. Trimacs are awesome, but in my experience they are one of the nastiest Amphilophus out there and is probably best kept solo. I think you should make a choice between the Grammode and the Festae and then try to work a comm. around one of them. Personally I'd go with the Festae because of their awesome looks. I'd give you more advice, but without knowing your tank dimensions and whether you have spare tanks to move a brutalized tankmate too I can't really give you good advice.

All my fish are babies between 1.5-2.5 inches. I will begin to grow a few in my 75 and 45 gallon. My 150 will be their home when larger and then next year i will buy a 240-300 (already started saving for the tank) Of all the fish the cuban is the most aggressive and probly the smallest. I plan on getting a trimac , and lyonsi to see which i like better. But also remember i plan on re-homing any fish that dont work out.

I grew out some cichlids in a 90 and tried putting 7 cichlids in my 300. Didn't work.
I now have a Midas, Freddy, Festae and a Jd in my 300. This might work, but it's still too early to tell. Midas is about 6"(largest) and Festae is 3.5-4"(smallest).....

Crossing my fingers....

Just be ready to shuffle some around. I thought 300 gallons would be plenty for half dozen cichlids. In my case, I was wrong. Hopefully you'll have better luck, but things get very interesting once they start reaching the 6" mark. Can't wait to see what happens at 10-12"

when i first started i had a 55 with a midas-7 inches, jag-6 inches, oscar-5 inches, and a 6 inch jag worked out fine. Ive come along way in this hobby and i dont plan on throwing them all in one tank
