Which Would You Prefer a Wolf Fish or a Fahaka?
What would you suggest for me? I am looking for a very aggressive, interactive, impressive looking fish. A little monster that I could purchase at about 1 or 2 inches that I can watch grow into a giant monster, not too quickly, and will be able to grow with him. I have been considering a Shark, Wolf fish, or a Fahaka. Well, I have been talked out of getting a shark, in another thread, they start at 2 feet and grow to about at least 7 feet. I just don't have the room for a 50,000 gallon tank, so that's out. Now I am researching my choices of a Wolf Fish or a Fahaka. Please help me decide, what would you prefer and why?

what size tank do you have for the fish?

Right now
I had a 55 gallon, but I'm looking to get a bigger one real soon. I also know that these fish need to be isolated so for right now a 55 is more than enough.

both of these fish, get to 18", so you'll need a big tank, i persoanly would do a wolf fish, but i just like them, but you'll need a tank about 180 gallons

I was planning to move up toa 300 gallon eventually. Do you know how long it takes for them to grow, you know, what is the growth rate? I want to, as I said in the post, purchase a 1 or 2 baby and watch it grow. I know a 55 gallon tank will be great in the beginning, but how long will it take for you to go out of the 55 gallon? Do they even come 1 or 2 inches (3 or 4 inches, really do make a difference)? As I also said I'm still in the research stage, my LFS does not get the fish in until around April so I have some time.

I have kept both wolves look impressive but are usually pretty bored until u drop something in there tank

fahakas look VERY impressive very colorful, VERY owner responsive, USUALLY up and about ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT begging for attention/food, they are down right killers 90% of the time they can easily be purchased around the 2-3in. mark, usually hand fed from the jump or with very little work, very fast growers up to about 10-12in.

never had a fahaka but i've had common wolf (Hoplias malabaricus) and a rainbow wolf (Erythrinus erythrurus) both make an excellent choice. if you only have a 55g you might wanna give the rainbow wolf a try. they average around 8"

Thank you
You guys are all giving great advice, let's keep this going, please.

If you want a fish that is actually going to move and that can be seen by guests without pointing it out, then I think you will be happier with a puffer! From my personal experience the "novice" aka "normal" person will be a million times more impressed by a puffer ( especially the ladies, they freakin' LOVE puffers!) if this matters at all to you? A puffer will also interact with you or guests more than ALMOST any other fish as they are fairly intelligent, my puffers would do a little "feed me" dance whenever someone came into the room, and they will follow your finger along the side of the tank, they can also crunch up SHELLS and whole crabs and shellfish!!! As much as I wanted a rainbow wolf when the LFS had a couple, if I could only choose one the fahaka puffer would be my choice hands down, you will not be disappointed, where with the wolffish you may be a little discouraged when you realize that it is only going to lay there until it is time to eat. But the final choice is up to you, so get the one you really want or you won't be satisfied!

I haven't had either but I have had a mbu puffer. He was very owner responsive, and just knowing that you have a fish that can take your finger off in one bite is pretty cool. The only downside with puffers is that you always have to had lots hard food for them to eat, clams, snails, crayfish, mussles, ect to keep their beak worn down and it does get a bit pricey.

Wolf fish are pretty cool looking though, but from what I hear most species aren't very active. If I did get a wolf though I would go with a Hoplias aimara.
