Length is better for fish that swim back and forth. You only need wide for specific fish. I'd personally go with the longer tank. 4 foot is kinda worthless for big fish.

x2. Also I like the deep tanks because it allows you to get larger pieces of driftwood without displacing as much water volume. I have a standard 125 and a 24"x30" but agree it all depends on the fish you plan to stock.
