White Cheek Moray Eel - info needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never seen those knife fish much above the footlong mark (even in public aquaria). The literature cites the white-cheek at 12-13". I had a pair that reached the 18-20" mark before having to sell them. Not sure of their actual full size.

I've never seen a coldwater american eel and a tropical white-cheek kept together.

Do you think they would be compatible, aggression-wise? I know it can sometimes be hit and miss with eels - either best buds, or not. LOL
May I ask why you sold your two whitecheeks? Did you enjoy having them? How were they with tankmates? Easy to feed?

Don't want to venture a guess on the compatability of 2 predatory eels that have never coexisted. Flip a coin and hope.

I kept my eels in an eel-only tank so, I can't say how they'd behave with fish tankmates.

I've had to sell all my fish every couple of years (for 20 years) whenever I received new orders to report to a ship (retired Navy).

Wow - that must have been tough - having to sell every few years. Ouch! What other eels were the white cheeks with, and were they submissive, or the aggressors?

Did you have any problems feeding them?

Echidna rhodochilus - One is at my LFS for a decent price. About a foot long.

Can he be kept in full fresh? Adult size? Rare? If not full fresh, how much salt each 10 gal?

He's gorgeous. Thanks

Sorry for replying to an old thread. I have an Echidna Rhodochilus, and it's about 30-35 centimeters long. The previous owner kept it in freshwater for a full year with no problem. I keep it in low/semi-brackish aquarium (1 part seawater from the beach, 4 parts freshwater from my own well), and it's doing well so far. Still not yet able to wean it off live food (I am feeding it live river shrimps), are still in the process of tempting it with frozen shrimps and bloodworms.

It's been here around a month, and looking healthy. I will keep the water parameters as is.

Sometime later I will experiment by putting tankmates (temporarily, only for a few days top) in Echidna's aquarium. I have a very tame, very docile Monopterus Albus and some Clown Loaches that might be ok with the Echidna. I will also try to feed shrimp pellets, and see if Echidna will be interested.
