I have a 40 gallon sump for a 265 gallon tank. There are only 7 fish, ranging from about 4 inches to 9 inches and I am getting a white residue buildup inside the sump. Im thinking its from the salt in the tank, but it doesnt smell or taste salty.

Does anyone else have this issue? is it normal?

Could it be the food? I feed them a mix of market shrimp, earthworms, mealworms, bloodworms, hikari gold, crickets and various flakes and wafers, only once a day and never enough to even make it to the bottom of the tank uneaten.

its reminds me of the calcium buildups i get from having such hard water. the water can have a lot of minerals, and as the minerals settle, or the water evaporates, they can cause deposits of minerals that look a lot like that.

its a freshwater tank, 265 gallons and I put about 1 lb of salt in the tank (equivalent for the tank size & amount of water I take out) every time I do a water change, which is about a 70% change weekly.

The film isnt hard, just slimy and thick. Could that still be the minerals?

yeah it could be, but it could be a fungus or mildew too. 70 percent water change weekly is a HUGE WC

yea, its what I had done with the fish I currently house since they were fry, so I had to carry it through when I upgraded to the 265, I feel. I bought a sump pump that drains the 70% in about 10-15 minutes, so its not that time consuming.

I would like to know what this crap is too. I get it in my sump as well. When I do a wc I like to try and keep my bio-balls wet by using a couple of cups of water and pouring it over them. This junk then gets disturbed and goes through the motor and into the tank. I have been trying to keep my net in front of the return to catch most of it. Out of water this junk is green in color.
Anybody else have any ideas at what this crap is and how to get rid of it????

id guess its just super oxygenated water, like found in and around white water rapids.

I had the same problem in my 30g sump, which is also with a 265 tank....noticed the white foamy stuff was where there was no water flowing...in one of the corners. I then put an air bubble wand underneath the crap. It first broke it up and made a mess, but haven't seen it since. My guess is it was from stagnit water, in my sump at least. THis was about 2 months ago or so.
