I googled what could be the cause for this white greasy looking film that I have on the surface of my tank and I can't figure out why I have it. My tank is 75 gallons, completely cycled, substrate is 30 pounds of aragonite, 30 pounds Estes sand and some crushed coral. Filtration is 2 fluval 405's(with bio rings filter floss and crushed coral in media bags) and 2 maxi-jet powerheads with aqua-clear pre-filters modified to fit them. Tank has 22 Mixed Mbuna's and I feed once a day. I have plenty of surface agitation, which I have read could be a solution. Any other reasons why I have this white film on my water surface??? Please help me!! Btw my water is crystal clear!!

Hello Amin,

The film is pretty common actually. Mostly, it's decaying matter, protein and maybe even oils off your hands and arms when you work inside the tank.

Some filters offer a skimmer option you can add on. There are also "generic" surface skimmers you can add inline with your canister filter:

Edit: The good Doctor beat me to it! :)

Thanx for the help guys!...but are there any other solutions other than a surface skimmer?

I tried a few things on my 55, but it just keeps coming back. I had a powerhead at the surface and it worked a little, but it was just a waste of current to me. I eventually gave up. I'm sure one of those skimmers will work, but I'm upgrading to a tank with overflows so I finally may not have to deal with it anymore. Good luck though getting rid of it.

Sorry for hjacking. But is there any of those that would fit FX5?

Fluval makes one specifically for the FX5. They show it on their website. The one Doc and I posted is generic, it will adapt to the intake line on any canister filter. They're pretty inexpensive...which is always a plus!

With the fluval 405 the hose is ribbed so I don't think that skimmer would fit it.

Ive seen people put nwspaper over the surface to soak up the junk. Ive seen that once in my tanks, and that was because the filter busted on it while I was in the next city over. Have you checked your water quality with a kit? Clear doesn't mean it is pristine.
