Fluval makes one specifically for the FX5. They show it on their website. The one Doc and I posted is generic, it will adapt to the intake line on any canister filter. They're pretty inexpensive...which is always a plus!

so does the fluval surface skimmer actually works for FX5? I read reviews that it won't work for FX5 as air is always pulled into the filter.

Ive seen people put nwspaper over the surface to soak up the junk. Ive seen that once in my tanks, and that was because the filter busted on it while I was in the next city over. Have you checked your water quality with a kit? Clear doesn't mean it is pristine.

For real? Good luck to those guys who gets ink leeched into the water. I'll just use clean tissue paper. And currently there isn't any kit to test for the surface film (organic matter)

water agitation just moves it around, doesn't really remove it. Once the agitation is gone, the film will form.

Hey Spirit...

Not sure...I don't own a FX5. I have one of the generic style like Doc and I posted. It worked pretty good, but I took it back off. Actually, after about 15 minutes, the water was skimmed clean. It took longer to hook it up than it did to skim the surface lol. But, the good news is...it worked.

Take care...

More agitation is good but it won't cure the situation. It would just push the oil around so you can't see it. You need to actually get rid of the film.

Yes. Ammonia and and Nitrite's are at zero and my nitrate's between 20 and 40 ppm

add a good spraybar or powerhead
I have 2 Maxi-Jet 900's with pre-filter attached. I have the 2 spraybars from the fluval 405's and the 2 Maxi-Jets and I get a lot of surface agitation. Water is prestine tank is fully cycled....I just finished doing a 50% water change while skimming the top film.....AND I STILL HAVE THE WHILE FILM ON SURFACE!!! Im just gonna leave it alone...fish are happy and healthy so thats what matters I guess....ME AND MY PET PEEVES!!:screwy:

Just to update my situation, white film is gone! Maybe it was like grease or something like lotion from my arms....I'm still stumped but I'm glad it's gone.
