Use an opaque tank background, there are lots of colors to choose from. The background will block the light from the window which would not only wash out the color of your fish but encourage unwanted algae.

white gravel is horrible even when you totally clean it still looks dirty dark gravel with a dark background really shows fish colors in my opinion
