Was just looking at my jaguar cichlid and noticed a white line in the middle of his pectoral fin, closer to his body. Tried snapping some pics but whenever I get the camera out he always backs off and swims away so I don't know if you guys can make it out but here's what I got...

I noticed it yesterday but have seen stuff like this come and go before, but it's usually not as big as it is now and although it's relatively small, it about doubled in length since I noticed it last night. Any ideas what it might be? Pretty sure I noticed the same thing last week on his other fin but it disappeared after a couple days... just bothers me I guess since I don't know exactly what it is. There's no cottony growth on it, it doesn't look like it's moving, and he doesn't seem to be showing any discomfort with that fin that I can see...

Also, don't know if it's related or just something weird that he's started doing... but I've noticed him wiggling/fanning his tail extremely fast in the gravel sometimes. Not sure how else to explain it, but his belly and everything will be rubbing in the gravel or bottom of the tank. Usually only see him do it in little gravel pits that he digs himself but just saw him doing it outta nowhere. He's the only fish in my 125, don't know if it's just a territorial thing or maybe theres some sort of parasite in the tank? he's just starting to turn psycho in the last month so a lot of these behaviors I'm seeing are new, not sure if they're normal or something I should be worried about. Opinions?

How old is this fish? Please post water parameters, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, Ph., hardness and temp. It could be a parasite or normal behavior, I can't tell much from the picture.

I got him in November 2012 at roughly 1.5-2", he's now around 9.5", so around a year and a half old?

Ammonia: between 0 and .25ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 5ppm
pH: 8.2
Temp: 79
Don't have a test for hardness
1,350gph in filtration with about 60-80% weekly water changes

I should throw in here that for the longest time I've had these very small blackish/brownish bugs in the tank that hang just above the water line for the most part, the only time I ever see them on top of the water is when I'm doing water changes and they just kind of skim across the water rather quickly. I've had quite a few fish in/out of this tank since I've had him until roughly 2 months ago when I finally decided to devote the whole tank to him, no QT tank.

Here are updated test results as of 5 minutes ago, decided to test my tap water for ammonia also... there's always been traces but now it looks like it's up to .25, here's a pic of the ammonia test for the tank which looks to be .25 also

Ammonia (tap): .25
Ammonia (tank): .25
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: does this look closer to 0 or 5?

pH: 8.2

Also looked at him this morning and noticed the line in his fin is still the same, but now he's also got a larger white thing next to his eye... hes a jumper so it's not uncommon for him to have gashes on his head every so often, just find it weird that this one is literally right next to his eye

So we got... white line on fin, wiggling tail/belly on tank bottom, white mark next to eye. Anything require treatment or should I just monitor everything for a few more days?

I would monitor him for another day or so. I can't really see anything. Nitrates look closer to 5. However the presents of ammonia with 0 nitrates might indacate a mini cycle. Did you just clean your filters? As a precaution add some aquarium salt, 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons of water. If this is irratation from the water chemistry the salt will help. Ammonia is much more toxic at higher Ph levels. Is your tap water normally at 8.2?

Yeah, pH reading out of the tap has been 8.2 every time I've tested it before... is it normal to have .25 ammonia out of the tap also? I did setup an empty 55 gallon tank recently and took 1 of my biowheel 350s off this tank and bought a 2nd aquaclear110 to replace it. That was this past weekend and I was a little worried at the time that I may have let all 3 HOB filters dry out too much... could that have anything to do with the problems I'm noticing right now?

My opinion...I have seen the behavior you describe in your jag in my jag as well... the wiggling in the gravel is nothing to worry about.( at least in terms of him not being well) it is a display/ spawning action...it is the male equvilent of like when an unpaired female lays eggs...your jag wants to spawn in the pits he is digging but their is no female present or like my jag he cant get to her...my jag does it frequently by the divider where I have a female on the other side ...it is bothersome to me because he does it often enough to tear his anal fin or create sore spots..he also fans his pectoral fin by the divider or does his "shake dance" and frays or splits his pec fin.. My jag seems to be prone to getting scrapes on himself... At times the dashes about the tank for whatever reason and gets a little scratched ..I think thats what's going on with yours..I can tell you like me want to keep your jag in top condition so these things are noticed.. Generally as long as you keep up with your normal good maintenance the marks will disappear....

Glad to see I'm not the only 1 like this. Most of the time he looks spotless, not a mark on him, so whenever I see anything outta the ordinary I start wondering what's goin on... then I start looking online at different fish diseases/symptoms and then I really start to worry. With no qt tank, it's expensive treating a 125 gallon tank. Makes sense though, 90% of the time I see him wiggling his tail/belly in the gravel is a spot where he's been digging. And he's a jumper so I'll hear splashes or him hitting the lid every once in a while, dont like the most recent mark by his eye though. Just did a 40 gallon water change tonight, probably do another 1 Friday and hope he's all healed up by the end of the weekend.
