he wasnt saying it was your oscars fault, he was saying its your fault for keeping it in too small a tank, how long have you had it? as he is right that oscar is sadly already being stunted and needs to be in a larger tank asap, you can start to help it by doing larger, more frequent water changes until you can get the larger tank set-up and yes that white edging on the fins is normal

hes been with me for about two months maybe? if it wasnt for being unemployed now he'd already have a new tank.

i do bi-weekly water changes of about 25%.

Thats not nearly enough..... How big is the tank? And how can you call it a rescue when you got it from petsmart?
What you are doing now is considered the opposite of a rescue.

20g- 2.5" tiger Oscar that what it say on his sig.

Sorry I was unclear. The large eye is caused by the neural system continuing to develop at the normal rate while the musculoskeletal system has been held back due to poor water quality and accumulated metabolic byproducts. His eye indicates the size that he currently should be.

by bi-weekly do you mean every two weeks or twice a week? with the oscar in that small of a tank you need to be doing like 50% waterchanges 2-3x a week IMO, and yeah oscars at this size grow 1in a month if not more so he should have already grown at least 2in since being with you, i dont mean to be insensitive about your situation as i am a college student and know what its like to be out of work but that is why you should have the tank first before buying the fish because you never know what will be thrown your way and keep you from getting the tank that you planned, in the mean time however you really need to up your water changes because he is obviously already being stunted, what are your nitrate readings?

because it was crammed in one of those little 1' X 1' tanks that they have with 6 or 7 other oscars bigger than it.

now, my question has been answered and im trying to get the bigger tank. Now unless any of you decide you want to come down here and take the oscar and buy off the remainder of it's food, it's not going anywhere. The points been made, im a crappy owner blah blah.

edit- sorry for the misunderstanding, i meant twice weekly 25% water changes.

double edit- my sig is right for the most part, its a 20g and he's 3".

triple edit- heck, if anyones in the georgia area and wants to trade a larger fish tank for something i got around the house im game.

there is a lot of white edged oscars around latley, its no disease, perfectly normal.

alright guys, what would you do in this position? should i find someone to sell/give to? being that the shortest amount of time will be a week or two away before i could get a new tank. would a fish store take him?

just keep it for a bit and try to upgrade as fast as you can he'll turn into a nice looking fish if you can get a larger tank in a week or 2 he'll live and be happy
