just keep it for a bit and try to upgrade as fast as you can he'll turn into a nice looking fish if you can get a larger tank in a week or 2 he'll live and be happy

but if he really is stunted, he wont get very much bigger? id hate to stunt him more.

I reread this thread and realize he may have been stunted when you bought him. 2.5" in a 20 gallon is fine for a few weeks as long as your nitrates are under control. Less than 10ppm of nitrates is best for Oscars.

It's hard to say how old he actually is, since they are usually crammed into storage tanks and crowded from birth, but his deformity at this point is not as bad as it could be, and with really good care I think you can bring him to adulthood. Just be on the lookout for HITH and any other sign. It was great that you were concerned about his growth line and I suspect you will make a fine Oscar owner once you get a big enough tank. 90 gallons will be a decent growout tank for minimal grief. Best of luck!

thanks! its going to take selling off my old paintball gear, but i gotta do what i gotta do..

will this stunt his max size or when he will hit sexual maturity or anything?

Predictions like that are speculation at best. He might turn out to be a monster in the end, it's just that the damage done now takes notches off of his general durability and potentially weakens his immune system and organs, but there's no saying that he wasn't extremely hardy to begin with. See what I'm saying? He looks like a fighter and he's looking fine for now. And that wound on his head healed over nicely so he's on the right track. Remember to feed him the occasional earthworm and cricket buffet between pellet days and he'll likely become big and strong for you.

earthworms? would i need to try to dig these up myself, or could i get some from a fishing store?

Listen man, I have Oscar's as well. I worried terribly about this and guess what I found to be the problem? GROWTH. Your Oscar is growing, the white fin ends are merely the undeveloped fins that will eventually grow into healthy bigger ones. Now my youngest Oscar's are around a year or so old, and the white tipped fins have drastically slowed down. So give it a little time, continue the good caretaking you are giveing it, and you'll see, one day he's gonna be HUGE!
That 20G has got to go though, Before you know it he will outgrow that tank and definetly become sick as a result of having such a small environment. it is imperitive that he gets a bigger home probably within the next month or two, you will see. Good Luck.
