White patch on pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the reply Lupin. Really nice to hear the silver dollar doesn't have HITH from a 2nd source.

Should I be replacing the salt when doing daily water changes this weekend?

I'll hold off on the Melafix.

I've never heard of Kanaplex, is a LFS likely to carry this? Is there an alternative? I'll have to browse the LFS at lunch today to see what medications they keep in stock (but I won't buy it yet, hopefully I won't need it).

Once this pleco patch issue is resolved, should I treat the whole tank with Prazipro since I didn't when adding the plecos? (1 pleco added April 1st, 2 more May 1st, and last one on June 6th, nothing has been added to tank since).

Salt does need to be replaced everytime you change the water. Changing water removes most of the salt.

As for Kanaplex, it is kanamycin. If you cannot find one, try a combination of Maracyn and Maracyn 2. They are erythromycin and tetracycline respectively.

Prazipro is very mild and does not affect fish heavily as most meds would but I would advise against mixing meds altogether for possible chemical reactions that may harm your fish.

Ok I'll take a look around at the LFS today to see what meds they have just in case I have to go that route. I'm pretty sure they carry Maracyn / Maracyn 2 if nothing else...

As far as salt goes, I know it needs to be replaced if I'm going to continue with the salt treatment. I guess my question was, should I keep up the salt treatment through the weekend?

At this point I'm hoping increased water changes (and salt?) will clear up the white patch. I won't use prazipro if I end up treating the tank with another med, but if the white patch clears up on its own, should I consider dosing the tank with Prazipro as a precaution for the rest of the stock? The red hooks and plecos were all wild caught I believe.

Thanks again.

I guess I should be more attentive and get a pair of reading glasses myself.

I just realized you were using salt for the supposed bacterial infection of the pleco. I'd stop that one and do daily water changes. If the white patches don't disappear after a few days, switch to antibiotics such as Kanaplex as I already suggested earlier.

When the white patch does disappear, you may use Prazipro as a precaution.

Ok great thanks for clearing that up. I'll stop with the salt treatments.

I'll keep you all up to date over the weekend.

Thanks again!

I did another 25g water change last night (did not replace salt). Will do another today and tomorrow.

But whatever the white patch was, I think its gone now :D

Just took the flashlight to the L-326 and didn't see any white patch. I'm wonder what it was...and if the salt helped or not.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I always say fresh water's the best medicine there is. Once again you proved it true ;) Glad he's better. Gorgeous Plec, too.
