Sorry I'm not sure if I should post this here in the Freshwater Disease, Health, etc, etc section because it's not really a disease on a fish or any other living thing but just a growth on the rocks and suction cups. I've had my African cichlid tank set up for about a week and I just not noticed (I've been gone for the past 5 days) that there is a white fungusy-looking thing on my rocks and on the suction cups. I'm not sure what kind of rocks they are, but we didn't rinse them off before putting them in the tank. There are no fish in the tank yet. The "fungus" looks like a little web like, but more like a whitish bubble with weblike strands that attached to anything on a different surface within 2 or 3 inches. The "fungus" is not very transparent. My brother thinks that it might be the aquarium salt (some kind of salt sold for african cichlids; I'm not sure what kind it is) and that it expanded or something. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

its not the salt. can you get a pic?

I know what stuff your talking about. I get it when I set up a new tank. I don't know what it is. It feels like a white alage that just latches to air hoses, seams, and suction cups. I just scrub it off. I haven't lost any fish yet. I'm sure its harmless.

P.S. I did not wash anything off before filling up the tank.
It's not just on the air hoses and suction cups but on the rocks too.

Sorry for the lousy quality but here's a couple of pics:

looks like some kind of fungus

Is there any way to get rid of it and is it harmful?

I had a thread about this exact same problem about a week ago. I had a new setup tank and it had this going on. BUMP for information please from the veterans!!

P.S I drained half my water and washed all the ornaments except my lava rocks because they are the BB carriers i am using to help cycle the tank. Hasn't come back (Crosses fingers)

It also did not seem to be harmful

The only ornaments in my tank are the rocks and I don't want to wash them because they are the BB carriers for the tank but I'll drain half the water and wipe off the suction cups when I get the chance so we'll see how that works.

It worked for me but honestly im not sure what or when this could have happened. Or if I went about it correctly you may want to wait and hear from the experts on here... usually they come right up with the scientific names and all that im surprised no helpful responses on your thread either yet :( In all honesty though mine hasn't come back so cleaning off the suction cups and the things you can and vacuuming never hurts right ?
