It worked for me but honestly im not sure what or when this could have happened. Or if I went about it correctly you may want to wait and hear from the experts on here... usually they come right up with the scientific names and all that im surprised no helpful responses on your thread either yet :( In all honesty though mine hasn't come back so cleaning off the suction cups and the things you can and vacuuming never hurts right ?

Yep

if i were you i would just buy some cheap hardy fish like zebra danios(around 5) and cycle the tank for 2-3 weeks. after that time if the fish are still alive with no problems, i would assume the fungus is not harmful to fish. also ive heard that somtimes algae eaters like plecos or snails will eat some kinds of fungus.

I watched my bubblebelly molly's in my community tank eat it time and time again with no problems yet. Im not saying go buy bubble belly's just that it probably isnt that harmful I did find this though after a while of searching hope it helps bro.

Found this on google.

Question
i have a large 55 gallon tank with 3 grey bichirs a 12" lung fish and a 10" spiny pleco and 3 bamboo plants. the substrate is sand since i have bottom feeders. the light is a 36" 30 watt uv bulb that is common in all pet stores. also i run the mini led halite system lights at night to add a twilight affect to the tank. i have floating drift wood that is new and i cleaned it for several hours before adding it to the tank. the problem is im getting this thick white slimy fungus, algae or sludge growing on the new branch only and not on the other floating piece of drift wood its sitting on to submerge it. i run a fluval 405 canister filter so i know im not over feeding and undercycling the water what if you know is going on here please let me know so i can figure this out.

Answer
Hi Mitchell,
What it sure sounds like is your tank has aquarium fungus. This is common actually, it stems from leftover food that gets into crevices of your tank decorations, then fungus takes ahold and begins to thrive there. Probably the best thing you can do is take the decoration out and scrub it really good (ideally with an aquarium algae scrubber) under running water, rinse it really well and see how that works. Be careful with feeding your fish, try yo make sure the fish clean up all their food and little particles don't float around.
Sometimes it can take a little work to get rid of the fungus completely, it really helps to vacuum the gravel and do water changes more frequently as well at least for several days.

I really hope this helps!
Best of luck,
Karen~

Hmm...Unfortunately, Karen's answer didn't help much because I haven't even put any food in it yet. Oh well. I'll have to try a water change...Wish me luck!!!

Good luck bro and just FYI My fish weren't in the tank 24 hours before this crap showed up so were in the same boat. Im a few weeks ahead of you and everything is fine and I (cross fingers again) Havent seen the white **** since then. Later ,

So did neither of you wash your ornaments before putting them in then having this stuff show up?

I'm thinking it might just be some sort of plastic film residue but I really don't know for sure. More just a guess.

When I buy an ornament it is soaked 3 days and washed off heavily while scrubbed on the third day if I cant initiate any dust off of it i will place it in the tank. Lava rock on the other hand gets soaked daily and submerged in tap water for a week . So I don't think its a plastic film. It looks exactly like African dwarf frog molt if you have ever seen that it'll give you a clue as to what it looks like except covering a few select items in the tank. Mine is under control now thankfully. :)
