300lbs test? Are you fishing for shark? :D
Anyways, put on 100lbs test Power Pro braid as your main line. As far as leader goes, I like to use 90lbs American Fishing Wire Surflon coated wire leader(it's only 90lbs thickness - it takes way more than 90lbs to snap it). Have at least 300 yards on your reel and chase down the fish if you have to do so. One of the best tactic is to let the fish drag the boat around while you just give it a little power to steer around avoiding the bank.
I like to use Ugly Stick Custom or Ugly Stick Tiger. I understand that you have to set your drag to its maximum before trying to get a hook set by swinging over the fence. But unlike any other fish, sturgeon gives you a few second before really take their run for it. Right after you feel confident that your hook set is locked on, loosen up the drag and let your rod and the drag do the work.
Fighting monsters on the Columbia or the Fraiser will give you a good one hour into four or even five hours fight.

I have caught a few. I use a salmon pole with 25lb test with 80lb braided leader on a 7 hook. Dont thumb the reel too hard when you set the hook. You will probably have to chase the fish in the boat. I use sand shrimp and only fish in low tides.

what i want to know, is how do you manage to break 300lb line? and where did you get a rod rated at 450lb test? i catch sharks on 40 and 80lb on boats and 20 and 40 in the surf with little problem. i dont see how a rod like that or line would break before the boat starts being pulled. and your physically holding on to 300lbs of force until it breaks? what reel and drag system do you have?

+1

I have yet seen a rod made with rating of 450lbs test and a main line being 300lbs test. I understand wire/steel cable leader line as being 300lbs test. But...it sounds a little odd.
