white sturgeon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As I have already stated, they are a federally protected endangered species. If the store has them labeled properly and is selling them, they need to be reported IMMEDIATLY. If they are not labeled properly, they need to be relabeled.

A phone call to your local FWS branch would be a good thing, let them make the ID. http://www.fws.gov/offices/

well i talked to the LFS they assure me that its a white and its not illegal lol that only if they are wild is it illegal to keep them and the ones they have are from a fish farm.

Fish farm = stertlet. (sp) Stertlets are the only of the sturgeon (that I know of) that breed readily in captivity.

Did they tell you max size? Stertlet get to be about 38" long. They are a rather appropriate sturgeon for a large fish tank.

If you are sure they are sturtlet, I would call your DEC people politely and ask... can a pet store sell white sturgeon? When they tell you "no", tell them what you know. That you think they are stertlets but they INSIST they are whites.... betcha a visit from the big boys will get that tag printed properly.

White sturgeon grow to be huge, they have "sensationalism" attached to the name. Most folks have heard of them No one has heard of a stertlet, and as a result...sales are lower with the right tag. But label them white sturgeon and everyone wants one and starts promising to build the big tank they will need when they grow that big etc....
