i'm guessing they were hiding in the sand. i bought my tank used 2 summers ago. It was a planted tank.

2 summers ago is like almost 3 years. I think this is more recent. Otherwise you would have noticed them beforehand.
they are every where they come in on tank decorations...in water from the pet stores, plants ext..
and even YOUR water...they are microscopic eggs that can live threw allot of chemicals and such ilk like long periods of drouth. harmless but a good indicator that more cleaning and less feeding is needed.

Lix I had a similar problem a year or so ago, I cut down my feedings to about half and it corrected itself in about a months time.
