I’m still not sure if I want to disrupt my current set up to add this guy. I have a big ol flagtail that can be a bit skittish and some tinfoil barbs that can be intrusive.
I feel like I may need to get rid of those to accommodate this guy and I’m not sure if I want to do that. From what I’ve read they don’t like silver fish and often grab the eyes off of fish they fight with.
Then I would have a one eyed pirate flagtail. Yarrrr.

Feeders...live fish...I wouldn't get it but that's just me. Nice looking but some work to keep. I guess you need to figure what's best. Although interesting, what's it going to take to care for it? What would you put in as a tank mate?
I’m not super worried about training it to eat smelts and silversides. I’m ok to take the challenge. I would like to train my rays to eat this as well so that’s not an issue for me.
As I mentioned earlier, I’m iffy on keeping my flagtail and tinfoil barbs with the payara though.
The reasons I am weighing if I am willing to pick it up or not include, that they don’t seem to have a super long life span- good or bad depending on what happens in my life. Next year I am supposed to be moving so that is a factor I need to keep in mind. I assume I won’t be able to ship it so would need to either sell or re home. I want to keep it in optimal conditions or else I don’t want to bother.
My tank has tons of movement in all different directions, a few dead spots to resemble eddies, and great aeration. I don’t think I will need to really change anything in my tank outside of the skittish silver fish that might become pirates. I already keep my water top notch and have a regular filter maintenance schedule with a fairly decent bio load.
I missed a weekend wc and started to freak out that my levels would be skyrocket. So I tested before I did the change and nitrites were hardly even registering on my test. This was before I took my pbass out.
