Who else here believes that Walmart....

Walmart is an awful place that, in my area, caters to a bunch of yahoos and single mothers with 11 kids. Because of the reputation of how they treat their employees(no, I never worked there), I have boycotted Walmart for the past three years and plan never to set foot inside one again.
 
Their security is a joke. Leaving Walmart once, they claimed to see a bulge near the hip of my pants/shirt, and demanded I pull out whatever it was and show it to them. I refused, because I said it was a violation of south carolina law. They kept pressing me, and claimed they wouldn't charge me with a crime if I legally owned what was tucked into my waistband. So, I pulled out my .44 mag and showed them :)

I only go there if I need something late at night and nothing else is open.
 
There are a lot of misguided emotions and logic going on here:

1) Walmart is not and will never be a monopoly. Too many other stores sell similar products, so until they are the only one, it's not a monopoly. Furthermore, unless they are buying out all competition and not allowing new competition to arise, it's not a monopoly.

2) If you don't like WM, do you ever shop there? If the answer is YES, then you get what you deserve. Put up or shut up. Patronize your local stores.

3) How much money do you save at Walmart as opposed to other stores? If you compare pricing and check it out, you might want to save that $1000 a year on food, clothes, etc. If not, go support the little guy and stop crying.

4) Walmart has gone into depressed and dying areas and set up shop, creating jobs, and providing an anchor for other business to set up around. Is that so bad?

5) If all the Walmart haters would actually shop at the little guys place, they wouldn't be forced out of business.

6) Check what you buy - Walmart provides the goods, but wont sell what doesn't move. Look to your politicians for NAFTA, trade with China for cheap goods, lower quality, and less jobs here because it's being made there. Who's to blame? - Go check the Clinton administration for a lot of that.

It's very easy to hate what's successful when you feel like you are struggling, but look at why you hate it instead of blind hatred.
 
I live in a rural county with only 3 small towns for shopping.When walmart moved in 10 years ago,alot of small buisinesses went under.That being said I have to admit,even before walmart I would avoid shopping at the local stores driving 60 miles to the nearest city to shop.Why?High prices and poor service.Alot of small buisinesses in small towns never had any competition ,so they didn't work very hard for your buisiness.The stores that are left have better selections more reasonable prices and staff that doesnt give you a dirty look when you walk in the door.Did we lose one or two good stores?Sure but most went under because given ANY choice people wanted to shop somewhere else.

actually K-mart bought out Sears. their stock is worth over 100 dollars right now! they weren't managed very well and hired turn around specialists. you could have made a fortune if you bought their shares when it sold for less than 2 dollars.
 
I'm glad that someone else pointed out that walmart is not a monopoly, they do not hold proprietory interests in any product, many of the products they do sell are above average in quality but these are the creme de la creme of their products. many of the brands they sell are the vary same brands sold at smaller stores at consirably more affordable prices. Economists talk about short vs long term gains, it is hard to consider long term gains when your family klives from month to month. It is a bit like being told to place 10% of your income into a retirementfund each month by people who clear more in a month than your family grosses in a year.
Walmarts are like fast food places, mediocre, monotonous, and convienient. Niche stores can still out compete them.
The main draw of Walmarts, other than price, is that they are convienient, and department stores have been hearing these same complaints since SEARS and ROEBUCK's or WOOLWORTH's opened. As for placing blame on the dissolution of local America one might as well put the blame on that smoking spawn of satan, the horseless carraige.
 
i woudl just like to say that i appreciate that walmart sells 750's of bleu alize and jim beam for 20$ and 11$ respectivly. Thank you walmart.
 
Again, as guppy and I pointed out, Walmart is not, and won't become, a monopoly. If money, smart business practices, and local politicians WHO ARE ELECTED BY THE COMMUNITY decide to give tax breaks, who's to blame? Walmart? - hell no, they put out a better business model. The blame is on YOU and YOUR COMMUNITY!!!!

Another good example - I can show you several communities in Long Island NY that have local Hardware stores that sell tons of tools and supplies because people don't want to go to home depot. HD has outcompeted many a small shop because they were poorly run, not monopolistic. Same thing for Walmart. Economists can spout about the "Walmartization" of America, but if people don't shop there, or feel the jobs pay enough and don't work there, Walmart will fast be out of business.


ZIP - for less expensive Bourbon, I like my Maker's Mark. If you want a good smooth small batch, I recommend Woodford Reserve or Knob Creek, and if you really want rough and high alcohol content with taste, go for the Booker's - my personal fav! :woot:
 
i dont drink it straight, with that new coke with lime... PERFECT drink.


Are you recommending those for mixers?
