When I came to this site I had a very unnatural 55g with way to many oscars in it. Same as others said, Petsmart 1" per gallon rule had me thinking I could fit 4 Oscars since the sign said they only get to 12" 12x4 = 48 gallons. I had a 55, I had room to spare! haha
Now I obviously know way better, I had the privilege/curse of starting out with a 55g. It was a privilege because I got it for nothing with a filter from my g/f who was not using it. A curse because I had no clue what I was doing and thus in turn stocked it with the biggest meanest fish I thought I could find at Petsmart.
Had I not stumbled across this site as I was looking for more information on the fish I had and issues I obviously had arising as my fish quickly grew to 8"+ in no time flat, I probably would have lost all my fish, gotten bummed out about it and taken down the tank and forgot about fish in general.
Instead, I stumbled across this site, did some more research, posted a few questions and now I have a great looking 55g, natural looking african tank with Peacocks that are breeding like wild rabbits. I am loving every minute of it and I could sit in front of that tank for hours. Some people have seen the progress I have made, through the questions I have asked and pictures I have posted (Red Devil and Mike D to mention a few...). Had I been shunned from this site because my tank was not big enough I would not be on my way to knowing more and more each day and hopefully in my learning curve still being able to help out some other people with somethings I do know now, that I wouldnt have a year ago when I loaded the tank up with O's.
Now I have my tank and have setup a meet up with some other local MFKers this weekend, all of which wouldnt have happened had I not come here. Seeing others big tanks and reading their stories and progressions has influenced my hobby in ways I never thought possible. I now look forward to reading about 1,000+ gallon tanks and ponds just as much as I enjoy reading about 10g tanks with shellies or fry.
Just my $.02...
