Agreed - don't feed for awhile - a couple of weeks - and let him get hungry...
I am still trying, the worms are a big step for him considering he only ate feeders before I got him from a friend. I dont like to starve my fish so I usually dont go over 2-3 days without food

no, my gar is a little over 16 inches so krill are to small but my oscars love them just like anything else I feed them
Oh okay....figured I'd ask since gar like to feed at the surface.

id say it depends on the fish's personality my gar only goes to the top of the water to gulp air other then that he swims all around and lays on plants on rocks
try tilapia tied to a string and jerk it to imitate an injured feeder salad shrimp also works well with that method

Maybe the krill you are feeding are, but in general krill are not too small. I have fed krill to fish a LOT larger than a 16 inch gar. I have also fed gar larger than yours, 7mm floating pellets. Training some fish can be a real challenge, but most are doable if one thinks outside of the box a bit, and is patient.

It's nothing for a large fish to go a couple of weeks without food. Our pet fish tend to be way overfed.

I don't think anything of going away for a week or so without feeding adult fish...they're hungry when I get home ... but ready to try new foods :)

I'm late to this conversation (I thought I'd already posted) . . .

Yes, I feed live feeders to my "mini-monsters" (hogchokers- a bottom dwelling ambush predator: "flounder" [actually a sole]).

However, the 'live feeders' live with them and they snack off the fry (I think, I've only actually seen one fry eaten, but I have very few molly fry). The "live feeders" are mollies and ghost shrimp. I also feed the hog chokers earthworms and hikari carnivore sinking pellets.

I will admit, seeing a predator strike at prey is part of the excitement of owning some fish. I do feel bad about the prey sometimes, but usually my predators eat the food rather quickly (inhale it) so I don't think the prey suffers too long.

I feed live food to my mudskippers too, but that's crickets and earthworms (along with other prepared foods).

Yes..I feed all my big fish except my flowerhorn live...but only guppies that I breed or minnow that I catch and keep to feed to my turtles...also routinely feed nightcrawlers from my garden.
