I did... like an idiot I trusted the lfs. I had bought 3 2'' redpacus told they would grow to 12''. End up growing to 20''.

i did and i dont regret getting them because of all the fish ive owned they are my favorite. I sold my 2 giants to a guy with an indoor pond.

yep i hear ya on trusting the lfs. i was told they where a species of silver dollar bred to look like piranha. i originally had 2 but a feeder fish outbreak of ich killed one, i now wish they had both died...

I have 3 red belly pacus and I love them they are my babies. The Big one which is about 17" I call Bubbles cuz she likes to play in the bubbles !!!
They are housed in a 240 gal with a pleco and a bumble chicild.
i got Bubbles when we purchased a 55 gal tank from a teenager, he had the pacu, an oscar about 10" , the bumble bee and a couple of other fish in a 55 gal, once i seen the pacu, I told my husband this was a rescue mission. Had to save her. Saved her life 2 times already, she floated belly up when we brought her home, the she got real sick when we got her a bigger tank, eyes with film on them, fin rot, did not eat for 1 month. Boy I was scared to move her when got 240 gal. But she did rally well that time.

They end up growing to be like 40#...so a little bigger than 20".

On top of that they are almost a circular fish.

The first time I bought red-belly piranhas I bout pacus. Its almost impossible to tell the difference when they are the size of your fingernail.

All of these fish are members characidae...and A LOT of them from SA are interchangeable as youngsters.
