who has made the pacu mistake?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am guilty....

When I was MUCH younger, my parents took me and my twin sister to the lfs. I ended up bringing home (3) 1" pacu.

It was def. a mistake. Once the fish broke the aquarium heater, my parents gave them away.

I live in a rural area, and am sure that my pacu came out of the tank with this label:

Somebody saw the adorable little baby pacus swimming with the bigger oscar babies and had to have a few of them.

5 years ago, my husband found our fish at a moving away yard sale: What a bargain--eight very large fish crammed into a 55 gallon tank

The poor pacus faces smashed against the tank walls when they turned around. One of the oscars was already dying of HITH.

We were newbies who at least realized we had an overcrowding problem. We upgraded to a 300 gallon tank.

All the rescued fish have passed away except for the pacu.

We are currently building a fish room to house the new pacu tank which is in storage until we have a place for it.

My husband's $85 yard sale find has turned out to be very costly.

i did and i dont regret getting them because of all the fish ive owned they are my favorite. I sold my 2 giants to a guy with an indoor pond.
About 15 years ago i made the mistake too.. 2 tiny little pacus... bigger tank and then bigger tank etc etc... and to this day... they are also my favorite fish so because of that i have no regrets...i just wish they were still with me.. at age 8 the tank wire had a short and then started a fire.. i lost them when the tank exploded... they were the most personable happy fish i ever owned.. very sad for me to remember them... :(

Yes they are rescues....except my husband didn't realize it when he impulsively purchased them.....We knew nothing about fishkeeping and had to go online to determine which were the pacus and which were the oscars. The previous owner told him they were pacus and oscars. That was not an auspicious start for keeping fish who could live 30+ years. My husband had no idea what he was committing to when he handed over $85 for that tank full of fish.

Sorry, we're not looking to get any other fish. We just want to provide a good home for the two we have.
