What a ghost.. yes this guy takes the cake..thanks for posting him.. How old is he by the way.. Just curious how long it takes them to grow this length.. he is fantastic and great pics.
Yes, most of those pictures are taken in the 55g he had been in for quite some time.
I inherited the fish when I married my wife, they kept it with the elephant and a pleco for about 10 years in that 55g tank.. They were fed 2 cubes of bloodworms a day, everyday, for 10 years.. with 20% water changes every few months.
After purchasing our house, I upgraded him to a 75g tank where he is now.. In with peaceful cichlids and tetras, he is doing quite well.. It took him some getting used to having the 18" turn space, he seemed confused at first, as if he was very content in his 55g.
I am waiting on a steal of a deal for a 125g.. I was going to move him into that and make him the centerpiece with a few appropriate tankmates such as angelfish, keyholes, and broad-bodied tetras.
The elephant nose fish passed about a year ago, when I attempted to add more tankmates to the 55g. He couldn't compete for food with anyone, and started to lose weight rapidly.. I was also trying to get him to eat a more nutritious prepared food, rather then me spending a fortune on frozen bloodworms.. Although the BGK adapted well to new prepared foods, the elephant nose didn't consume nearly enough food and I attempted to isolate him for bulking up.. He didn't take the move well.
I understand that BGK and Elephant noses aren't suppose to live togethor because of their frequencies.. Originally there were 3 elephant noses and the one BGK (6" back then).. Eventually the largest elephant nose killed off the other 2, and seemed bonded for life with the BGK. They never fought each other, but whenever I attempted to add tankmates (angels, geos, anostomus, leaf fish).. the elephant nose would get very territorial and 'chase' other fish constantly, until I had to seperate them. Any tankmate I could put in there that was fast enough to elude the elephant nose, would also out compete him for food..
Pretty soon I will be doing a major overhaul on my 375g and I would like to do a themed South American tank.. 4 reticulated rays, big BGK, angels, severums, geos, and silver dollars..with a flurry of skirt tetras perhaps.. I think the BGK would love it, and I will give him some PVC tubes hidden inside the aquascape so that he can escape the torment of the over active rays.
Anymore ?'s let me know!
