I swear to you on all my aquariums that it is 8.5", I've had it since it was .25" long. I'd take it out and measure it but its a bid stressed by beeing beaten around by the channel cat when I was removing him along with everything else in the tank cept the Bluegill to take to cabelas. Once she settles down a bit more I'll prove it to ya.

No need to take your fish out of the tank. To me, it's not worth taking a prize fish out of the tank and have it flopping around on the table while you measure it. You can tell by your intake that it's at least close to the length you're saying. 8-1/2" long isn't all that big for a sunfish anyway.

I believe you...8-1/2" stands as the biggest sunfish on MFK so far.
