I keep tiger barbs in a 55 as dither for my clown loaches. I haven't had any problems with aggresion, but at the moment I have 6 (I had 10 at one point, but after a nasty ich outbreak...) and I've heard they'll give you problems if you don't have enough of them. I guess the idea is that if you have enough of them they will harass each other instead of the other fish.
I would also avoid keeping them with any slow moving, long finned fish as they will be constantly nipped.
