this year we are finally going to use out fireplace. We are trying to cut down on out energy bills to save for our baby. so I have the luck that her parents live in a woods So I have been cutting some wood here latly. And bringing it home and splitting it by hand. (it's a nice workout.) my only problem is that the saw I have is totally not big enough. It works fine but I want something bigger. lol. I think before the year is over I am going to look into a big stihl.

So who uses wood to heat there homes.

What kind of saws/spliters do you have.

and how well does it heat your home?

When I am done splitting i'll show some pics of my wood pile. (not today)

In my experience a wood stove heats a room/house much more efficantly than a fireplace. But depending on the size of the house it can be done.

I have a Morso woodstove. It has a 12 hour burn time and takes 14" logs. Its wonderful. It easily heats our entire house and I really only have to make 2 fires a day. We have a Stihl woodsman (i think) chain saw. My husband splits the rounds by hand using a big maul and a wedge and i split that with an axe. When we lived in a different state, we had scavenging permits purchaseed through the state which allowed us to pick 3 (i think) state parks to scavenge fallen wood. Here we had a logging truck of oak dropped off about 2 years ago for $600, we still have 4 or more cords left from it which is another 2 yrs of firewood.

I have a Fisher insert for sale 2'x3'.:) I heat with wood but I buy it from the locals. Don't go to big with your saw or you will get a workout.:nilly:

I want to get at least a 28" bar. I totally overuse the 16" craftsman I currently have. It will do fine this year but by next fall I will need a bigger one. the 16 is a good saw but not enough to keep cutting for extended periods of time the chain dulls really fast.

I wonder if I can get scavenging permits here in ohio? I don't live to far from a nice state park. Something to look into. I maul my own wood for now. It's a nice workout and I can't afford a nice spliter.

We have all the components to make a splitter but my hsuband and I both enjoy the work as well. Mainly because we are so ahead we don't have to do it when its crappy out in the middle of winter, lol. The permit we had cost $30 and you could pick 3 parks to scavenge wood from. We heated our last house for 2 years by collecting fallen wood that way.

600 BUCKS??????? WOW! Here in my city they almost want to pay you to take the wood... We have tree service people who cut down trees for a living and all ya gotta do is make a phone call and they are glad to find somewhere to dump a bed of wood... All ya gotta do is split it yourself... We have a nice wood burning stove that we use all winter long to heat the house... I have alot of pine trees around also that we use to burn in our outdoor fire pit in the summer...

I chop wood and split with a wedge and sledge hammer i enjoy it but i don't do it to often. I have natural gas fireplace in the house that i use once in a while but i like a real fire better. I put a load of split logs in the burn barrel put the t.v out on the back porch and watch football in the cool weather with the fire at my side and a cold beer in my hand it's awsome i love autum.

we cut our own wood for the fireplace when i lived in upstate NY

In San Diego, I just wait until October and usually the whole state is on fire anyway, so who needs wood
