Who here has bred cons in a 10 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had a male black and female pick breeding from 1.5 to 4 inches until the filter died while i was away for a weekend, somehow the male survived female didnt
i had sand with a ton of 6 inch diameter pots, some clay plates, slate, and about 6 1 inch pots for fry to hide in, im now breeding a pair in a 30 gallon rubbermaid

convicts will breed in a tank thats completely empty, mine have used the silicone in the corners of the tanks to lay their eggs on... They dont care, they arent picky, and at about a 1/2 inch, they should have some visible orangish color on the flanks for a female.

with cons it is hard to get them to not breed.. i pulled my pair out of my 10 gallon last weekend and put them in my 75 and they are already acting like they are going to breed again.. its kinda anoying actually

True very true.. but there agression goes through the roof when they have a babies..

when i had them in the 10 gallon i couldnt look into the tank without the male just staring me down and puffing up at me.. now in the 75 they picked the middle of the tank to spawn.. now my tank is divided right down the middle:grinno:

I've had a pair of 3" cons breed in a ten gallon. The wrigglers all randomly disappeared. Then I moved them to a 30 gallon, where they bred again, and all but 1 of the fry got eaten by the 9 1" midas cichlids that were in the tank with them. I bought a mate for the little female that survived today, so I'll probably have 100 more cons in a week or so. They're both about 1.5-2".

My cons would pick a nice ceramic cave right at one end of the tank to spawn to driftwood and java fern overhanging it. There was little to no aggression. Last night I gave the tank a good decor change and now they can either spawn out in the open where they will be forced to be placid or spawn in a place completely surrounded by plants which will mean NO aggression. :D

will the parents eventually eat the fry?

i was wondering this too. also how many babies per spawning and how fast do they grow? thinking of feeding them to my bichirs and wolves.
