who here keeps longnose gars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, longnose gar are very interesting fish. I had 7 small gar in the 13 to 17" range last year. I got them from the Potomac River. They would pound minnows like you wouldn't believe. I would toss in 2 dozen small golden shiners and they would get taken out in about 5 minutes. It was pretty wild seeing the feeding frenzy start up. The gar grew too big for their tank so I decided to let them go. If I had a pond, I probably would have kept a few.

I'm wanting to get one, one day.

what kind of tankmates can they have?

evil monkey, gars are usually dosile creatures. However, if a fish will fit in it's mouth they will try to eat it. I have kept many of them and have not had one try to beat up on any of my other fish. Usually they are the one's who get picked on. Just make sure you keep other large fish with them.

i got 2 today, they are like 5 inches each. they reside in a 90 community tank with nothing agressive except the royal clown knife, but i dont really consider that to be agressive.

oops i lied they are needle nose gars...my b

i love how names differ all over....... does tim the tool time taylor sell thease fish?

Underwater Adventures does!

I have 4 in my pet pond by the house. Three are about 3' long and maby 5 or 6 pounds. Miss Gracey is a bit over 5' and about 22 pounds. I feed them chunks of fresh fish allmost every day and they are quite tame. There was some spawning about to start today. They do not bother any of the other fish in the pond of any size. HappyFish
