who here uses industrial shelfs as a stand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most of them are limited only by the shelving material itself. The thinner ones with partical board shelves should be avoided but the thicker steel shelving can handle a LOT of weight if you add a piece of 3/4" oak plywood over the existing piece and install a center brace. The heaviest tank we have used on this type of shelving is a 55 gallon.

On the other side of the coin.... Unless your getting some free shelving or something along those lines...The units your talking about are MUCH more expencive than the materials would cost to build a VERY strong 4"x4"...2"x4" based wooden frame.

I have a 36" length Gorilla rank. I have a 29 gallon on it for almost a year and it's still on it. I will probably take it down in the near future because the board is starting to flex a little. Wolf is right about the board being weak. I don't think the shelf I have is made of particle board. If you get one these shelf make sure you use brick on the bottom to give the tank extra support. The model I have specify that each shelf can handle up to 500lbs maximum when EVENLY supported.

I got one and its amazing, I reinforced it with 3/4" plywood and some steel thin 2" wide metal strips.

home depot sells a rack similar to that but more beefy... I had 2 x 125 gallon tanks on it without any problems at all. If I had more height in the ceiling I could have put more on it too!

Think it was rated for 7000lbs or something crazy like that, and was only $199 CDN

I work for Grainger and used to do Tech for material handling and shelving, the units are basic units, just make sure to use the per shelf load not the total unit load, and brace on the arms themselves, not the wood. They should be more then enuff........

IMHO....And I got paid for it.....

It's do-able. I use 2x4's to span across the cross members as additional support to distribute the weight. They are very versatile.
