Cause they ARE psycho. They run into anything. They do backflips when they eat, smashing thier faces into the top of the aquarium. They get spooked and they will put thier face on the glass and try to swim through it. Calouses all over thier nose, sometimes not recovering and thier nose stays that way. I had one I called "poo bear" cause of this. Was missing part of his snout. They also shed scales during this freakout session. Knock thier teeth out all the time.
They are NOT flexible at all. They turn like a wooden ruler.

They aren't a fish meant for tanks, unless they are truley monsterous tanks OR you raise them from little guys so they kinda understand the way life is......

Beings that I have one and have witnessed this behavior, and know what would happen if I bagged mine up, KNOWING it's been captive it's entire life.... I wouldn't expect it to survive being shipped.

I'd expect 25% survival on a good day..... But hey, all I know is what I have experience with.

I moved mine earlier this week and it looks like it was in a war... Only lost 1 tooth this time though. Lots of missing scales and nose calouses. Sadly I will more then likely be moving him back to the pond. It's friggin irate being in a tank and the tank is 2.5 wide.

I have a VERY juvenile specimen that is in a 29g. Just 4" and has bumpped it's snout already. The incredible thing is that it wasn't on the glass but the syphon during a water change. It attacked the hose 4 times during the change which i have never seen before. And i have a ruddy 14" Mala.

When it hits 5-6" it will enter my 160g but the goal is a 500+ within 2 years so it's unlikley it's going to struggle for space.

They are without question, the most fantastic strikers ever. My Tat is lazy in comparison. And i think my Tat is awesome.

i agree w everything DB said.

i already have 2 growing out;)

a rhaph that big would need a 1k+ tank...

yep DB's right. local LFS dont carry the large ones cos they usually die before they can be sold. Not only do they bump/scrape themselves to death, very suseptible to getting picked on. they do need a large space. I used to have 6 of these guys, got them at 2.5", all but 1 died when they got to 5~7 inches. not even sure why the one left has survived so long. 9inches now and pretty stable. watched it eat a 2inch gold fish last night and started to like this fish again... guess it comes down to personality. fish from a pond... erm

Just got done moving mine again. Had it in my 300 that's 2.5 feet wide. Not big enough. The thing was pissed. Back to the pond where it enjoys being able to stretch its fins. Couldn't get a 100% measurement but looked to be around 14 inches.

I'd definetly buy a shoal of small ones to grow out. Unlike you folks these are NOT available to me. Wish they were... Mines lonely and is stuck looking to the Cynos and Odoes for acceptance. At least he's not cramped though...

smaller guys would be awesome!!
I gotta find a 3 incher!!!

Or a tat, or a scomb!!!
