I'm looking to buy a USED woofer/amp/box combo off Craigslist. Used means it's going to be a few years old and whatnot and I'm fine with that.

Just not having much experience with car audio I'm wondering if people know of brands to stay away from or good quality brands to look out for.

I'm not looking for crazy bass, just something to compliment my stereo system.

Infinity or alpine are good brands

I don't know of any brands to look for .... I have always built my own boxes, they are really easy to make and when you make it you can make it as mile or wild as you want ... and know that when you got your system turned up and the bass hit's your box is going to stay together and no blow apart...

if you do buy from CG make sure the box is sturdy look how the screw holes look, make sure the box will fit in the trunk of your car ... sounds silly but I know people who have bought boxes and then come to find out it didmn't fit their vehicle lol

I personally like alpine head units , rockforfosgate amps, rockforfosgate, mtx, JBL , cerwin vega are good brands of subs

As far as subs I have 2-jl audioW6V2 12" and jl audio 1000.1 amplifier.. I'm fully satisfied with it.. Always been a jl fan and always will... Give it a try ! I know you will enjoy it !

Try and get some "SundownAudio". I have yet to own but I hear they are the best brand for your buck

Rockfors fosgate is a good company not to derail but i have an amp lying around if you want to buy one:naughty:

It's actually for my girlfriend and her car is already wired up, she just blew the old (old, old) subs. The head unit in there now is fine.

I'm not 100% sold on Craigslist, but I feel that there is a lot of turnover in the car audio market and it would be easy to get a pretty decent deal instead of buying new. I definitely don't need brand new top of the line gear, it's just getting stuck in the trunk.

How many watts at how many ohms on the amp? 1, 2, or 4 channel? See, I've done some homework. :P

That video is terrible. "Mad props dude, mad props." That dude looks like a total douche.

So now that I have a few good brands to look at, what are some to stay away from?

This is the sort of stuff I've been checking out.

Stay away from Sony, thats for sure.

Rockford Fosgate.. the newer lines suck. If you can find old school RF equipment, you would be good. I think the trans-ana line is the last line of RF's prime. Old school underrated cheater amps. :) They are still my favorite...

I never liked pioneer, always had a problem with alternator whine with those head units or some type of noises. And was never a fan of their subs/amps

JL is overpriced, you can find much better equipment for the money.

But since its for your gf she probably won't even be able to tell the diff of whats good and whats bad.. If it were me, I would just look into some Image Dynamic subs. They are great sounding subs that do not require an uber amount of power and if you can find a used one, the price is not bad at all. And just find an amp to match it up with.

Remember D4 subs will be wired at 2 ohms and D2 subs will be wired at 4 ohms, it will differ with multiple subs. So match your amp and subs accordingly!

IME, underground brands are the way to go. You can look at caraudio.com or diymobileaudio.com for tons and tons of info as well as decently priced items in the classifieds.

Like west1 said, jacob @ sundownz makes awesome stuff. :)
