BTW AK47s are legal as long as they're semi-automatic.

Even an authentic fully auto firearm is legal with the proper tax stamps.

yep.. if you do the right paperwork.. pass the background checks.. pay the right fees (aka keep big brother happy) you can have prettymuch whatever gun you want...

It has nothing to do with paying takes.

It has to do with whether you live in a state where automatic firearms are legal or not.

Then you have to take the classes, pass the background check, pay for the permit,etc....

its not "paying taxes" as in W2s and 401k and all that stuff.. but it is a "tax stamp".. usuially $200..

yahoo has the shortest, simplest basic answer so here it is

"
There are currently 37 states here in the U.S. that allow the possession of automatic weapons. The requirements are that you submit an application to BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco &, Firearms & Explosives. As part of that application a complete criminal background investigation is done and you must submit a set of current fingerprints as part of the process.(Finger Prints fee's vary from $15-$20 depending on the state of residence)

Once approved, you will be required to pay a one-time fee of $200 for a Federal Tax Stamp per weapon (There are NO, REPEAT NO additional FEE'S,Dealer's Licenses or anything additional required!!)

With the GCA of 1986 (Gun Control Act) Civilians are not allowed to posess fully automatic weapons unless they were manufactured prior to 1986. The weapons manufactured before 1986 are "Grandfathered" meaning they can still be LEGALLY transfered thru a licensed/bonded Class III NFA Weapons Dealer.NO fully automatic weapons made after 1968 are legal for civilians to own or possess.

In addition the permit once issued requires that the permit be with the registered licensed weapon at all times and especially when transported. You must also show proof that the registered weapon is stored in a safe or locked container that meets BATFE guidelines. Issuing the Permit also allows BATFE to make a personal inspection of your residence or storage area once annually.(Usually announced prior by appointment)

Several states have their own state restrictions or laws of ownership for these weapons and a person who is licensed with the weapon is subject to the state laws of any state he visits or may travel thru.

If you can find a grandfathered AK-47 or M-16 you can technically purchase it but they are extremely rare and quite expensive......You would be better suited to pick something easier to obtain

^ You slide that to the range you are shooting at. 1 = 100 yards, 2 = 200 yards, etc...

The points on a Kalashnikov sight are in Meters not yards. The general rule is to just set it at P (Battle sight setting) which is good for up to 300 meters and dinner plate or less MOA at these ranges for typical M43 ammo. There is not much point to setting beyond P unless you are zeroing the rifle to a certain distance for some reason. Generally they are calibrated and set already for this setting. Rest of the notches are not really needed so much.

Elevation and windage is controlled from the front sight. If this is not calibrated properly you will never see accuracy. See above It should be zeroed at setting P from the factory. You can fine tune it with the correct tools and a knowledge of how to do so. Have no idea what your doing do not touch anything in the front.

An airsoft toy is not the real gun. do not expect a setting on one of those to be realistic for a real rifle.

I'm just not commenting or bothering on the NFA firearms issue.

100% correct.

Sight the rifle in on the P setting at 25 meters and your measure of bad guy out to 300m. No need to adjust, besides past 300 meters you will most likely need more then irons to to any tight groups. (hitting a pie plate at 300m is definately a challenge with an AK)

AK sights SUCK though and are very crude and part of the reason why AKs are not the most accurate rifles.

One of the big reasons AK sights suck so much is the eye distance between the front and rear sight. It is very short and one has a very long eye relief. Finnish (Israel too with the Galil) fixed this issue with the Valmets by placing the rear sight on the back of the receiver cover. Works great, makes more sense and provides for better aimed fire.

One can actually become proficient with AK stock irons but it is quite a learning process and kind of just out of the guns general charecter. (It begs to be just fired quickly) They can actually be surprisingly accurate if you do your part and the gun it self is tuned up.

IMO anything past 300 for accuracy just give up. The gun will not do it and neither will the 7.62x39 round.
