Who makes the quietest external pumps?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What do you mean "they make noise if run as dry application". I will be using these in the sump, not external.

Also, I will be using a canister filter, but that will have it's own pump. I was thing a mag 12 or 18 also, That will also be internal in the sump.

One other thing. When I measure for head loss, to I just count the distance from the pump to the tank. Or, do I count the line from the sump to the pump then onto the tank?

Thanks

X = High Flow/Low Head - these are quieter and less watt/gph, but head is a lot less

The Hammerhead and Barracuda are different pumps - different pressure, difference in noise

Mags being loud. You can run a Mag dry (externally) or internally, your title says "what.... external..." You go on to post that you want to use Mag 12 or 18, so, b/c of your title I assumed that you would be using the Mags EXTERNALLY, in which case, they always make an annoying noise.

No, you do not count the distance from Sump to Pump, flow must be entirely unobstructed when using these pumps, they are not suction pumps.

So if I don't count the distance from the sump to the pump, then I screwed up. Because I did count it. So my distance from the pump to the tank is 10ft I always thought it was 14ft. Now I would use flexible lines with 1 ball valve each.

I punch in at this head loss calc: http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/hlc...Couplings=0&CheckValves=0&Exits=1&Entrances=1

10ft vertical
3/4 line
blueline HD 40
1 ball valve

and I get 495GPH

Now I'm looking at use 2 of these pumps, 1 for each return. Doesn't seem like it's enough.

I made some calls and was being told that would be enough: 1 for each return or 1 HD 70 for both. Is that right?

thanks

Is this loud pump plumbed all the way with hard PVC pipe? It could be that the hard pipe is passing the vibrations from the pump into something that is acting like a soundboard and amplifing the sound.

I had one aquarium that was drive me crazy until changed 1 foot of the PVC out with flex tubing. I can't even hear the pumps anymore ( although its a loud room with other stuff running ).
