I know the word "hybrid" gets shoved out there too often. but it doesn't look exactly like any one species. now this doesn't necessarily mean its a hybrid. it may be a individual of one species that shows attractive abnormal traits to the species, such as a firemouth with really really nice blue spangling.
I know I have seen a few impressive male firemouths with lots of red, or some blue spangling. but this seems to be a lot of spangling for a 2" firemouth. either it's from a locality with lots of blue and is a high quality specimen (we have all seen those show fish with INSANE colouration, they have to come from somewhere)
either way we can keep figuring this out as the fish grows. it may develop more and more blue until it turns out to be ellioti or something.
truly stunning fish though Chub_by I hope you plan on breeding it!
can I also add, that if you hyridise 2 fish together you get about 200 dull brown fish, and maybe 1 or 2 with attractive features. to produce really nice hybrids takes years and years of line breeding and planning out the traits you wish to keep or cull. for someone to make a hybrid that came out that good, and it be sold with firemouths really wouldn't make a whole lot of sense would it? So I am positive its a fully blooded species, just right now not too sure which! I saw juvenile ellioti that looked a lot like that, but they were also around 1" so they might have changed.
