who protects the eggs

There has been a domestic dispute with one of the pair chasing the other away. With out knowing the sex of either, it would be difficult to say with certainty which sex is now tending the eggs. A few cichlids (such as jewel cichlids) will share egg fanning/tending duties to a fairly significant extent, though most CA/SA cichlids I know of, it's pretty much the exclusive resposibility of the female to tend the eggs, while the male guards and patrols the outer border. But I have had a few rare exceptions where the male chased the female away and took over egg tending duties, exclusively. So it is possible for the male to take over the job of caring for eggs .....though its rather unusual. Now when it comes to taking care of fry, males are often much more involved.

im confused, male blood parrots arent fertile, then you said i had to test it to a proven fertile male,if a male blood parrot isnt fertile how can i find a proven fertile male.the eggs are dark in color and not white which means the eggs are fertile right.and my 3 rts are only about a inch and a half surely they are not ready to breed, and if they are none of them are helping her protect the eggs. she is the only one protecting them running off every one.

Sorry I made that confusing. I mean't a proven male other than male BP. And it is a possibility that both your BP are female. Sometimes they get confused. I actually have a KKP and BP that have paired and protect a flower pot together and they are both females. No eggs yet, but they act very much like a breeding pair.

mom stays with eggs and protect them most and sometimes from the father breeder also.. But they can take turns guarding the eggs.. But the one that stays with the eggs most should be the mother

Are the eggs still good? They can keep their orange or brown color for a few days before turning white so look for black dots in the eggs.

no i had a baby flowerhorn in the tank and he ate the eggs.i removed him.im just glad theres a female in the tank cause im wanting to breed it to one of my rt males if they are fertile.thanks for the come backs,my kkp was always guarding the eggs he/she is the biggest in the tank.my 2 rt males are about an inch and a half so i dont think they can breed yet,at least i wouldnt think so.and the blood parrot is a little smaller than the kkp.ill just have to wait and see i guess

your kkp is most likely the female. Almost always the case with the guarding, while male patrols and females tend to get aggressive and chase off the male even if it fertilized the eggs. The eggs will stay brownish/clear white for a while. If they are fertilized you'll see black dots and have wrigglers in a few days so you would know. Eggs will eventually turn white and be eaten by female while she cleans if they are not fertilized.
