Who puts polystyrene underneath their tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With plastic trimmed tanks, such as those shown above, the glass base itself will never touch anything.

Very good point, but for those of us who have acrylic tanks, what would be your opinion? When i set up my 300, after spending several thousand dollars on the setup it seemed a little silly not to spend the extra $40 on a little insurance. in addition, my mats are not under the tank. They are under the stand. Plywood sits between my tank and stand.

As previously stated;

When in doubt, check with your aquarium manufacturer as per their set up instructions, and their warranty.

FYI - I know of at least one acrylic tank manufacturer that will not honor their warranty unless you use one of their stands. Ditto to some glass tank manufacturers.

Cool. Thats what i figured

Wow putting all those tanks on cinder blocks is a bad idea, one day it will buckle to one direction sending all the tanks in line over, and on top of that the tanks are positioned halfway onto the blocks making an outward force.

I never said that it was a good idea.

I used those photos as an example of how THE most important thing to supporting a glass aquarium, is ensuring that ones tank is evenly supported (as in no twisting force) on all 4 corners. All-Glass (now Aqueon) makes most of their high end stands so that the tank is only supported in all 4 corners. The rest of the tank is free floating, just as the ones in those cinder block photos. This includes tanks/stands from 125-210 gallons.

i never said you thought it was good idea neither did i say anything that had to do with you. i agree with your point though, and i realize why you chose that picture. im referring to the people who have those tanks in the picture

Relax there fellow Albertan, it's all good. lol

From what I could gather those tanks were supported like that in that particular store for several years, might even still be there. :)

lol yay another fellow albertan!!!!. sorry i didnt mean to come off in a bad attitude, its really hard to show tone through typing. i guess that person got really lucky, or had them balanced just right to work. i would not do it like that though. but to each his own.

Ahem, I believe I the thread starter am also in Alberta ;)
And to clarify things, I just moved recently from Europe and I've never seen a tank that wasnt All glass :P only stuff from like the 70's that came from Germany, which lets be honest is where the hobby was properly founded.

I never realised it was as simple as distributing weight to the 4 corners, It feels like this whole hobby runs around these "wives tales" and Its really quiet fun to hear some of them, like the egg crate rock thing, they don't even sell egg crate in europe from what I've ever seen! but I cant vouch for every European country obviously just the ones I've been to :P

thanks for all the information guys!
