Well after everyone saying a few weeks back that UV do nothing was wrong

My tank water started to go down hill fast and I couldn't work out why I done everything I could to sort it out but just couldn't get it clear

http://youtu.be/wGXZPDQY16E

The last thing left on my thing to try list was strip down my 4 x 25w UV units and clean the sleeves which had not been done for 3 years I change the bulbs all the time but the sleeve clean is a bit hard on my tank

When I took them all apart the sleeves where all covered in scale so bad no light was passing to the water so no UV treatment

I cleaned them 2 days ago and this is the result

Who said they don't do anything

Do you have a water drip or auto water change setup going on your system?

You reminded me of installing mine back again, Richard.

Great video comparison from a clarity standpoint.

How did you go about cleaning the sleeve? Any special cloth type?

Yes I have auto water change

All water parameters were fine

It maybe a case of the water being treated then it stops that you get a big green out brake but needless to say I will be cleaning the sleeves yearly from now on

Auto drip or not I think that without the UV a kind of bacteria grew in the sump meaning no mater how much water you added it still needed to pass throw the sump

As for all this you need to spend loads of $$$$ to setup a system that's rubbish mine cost $160 and look at the results

I'm a believer as well I had problems with my tank and bacteria spikes, ever since I installed my UV light I have never ever had that problem again crystal clear and healthy fish

They come apart easy it's just the way mine are set up that's hard to take them apart as well as 6ft of pipes to blow water out of

They had so much scale on them no cloth would have helped I had to put the sleeves in kettle de scaler over night then go at them with a pot scrubber

This problem only started happening after a turned the UV off for a week when I treated with melafix

So they must have got coated from the melafix when they where turned off this also confirms people who turn them on and off a certain times are messing up the sleeves

Yes I know after 3 years they probably did need a clean but the week they where turned off gave the bad bacteria a chance to get started on the weak UV system

The water had lots of tiny particals floating around and everyone told me I needed more mech filtration I knew that was wrong as I have never had a problem in the past

Like I said the water parameters where fine and nitrate as low as 5 I flushed the whole tank with the water drip at a rate of 50% per day 500 gal for 4 days even cut down on feeding in that time but still after 2 weeks it was green

It's clear again now and that's 6ft of water you are looking throw to the back of the tank
