Who successfully keeps lower and upper jaw together?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a 13"ish weeksii and a slightly larger lap with an 8 inch retro, sen, del, and 9-10" lap and ornate.

Well I did not plan on it but a buddy of mine will buy the three upper jaws that were in question. So this whole thing was a waste of forum space, lol.

Was really not sure what I was going to do but my decision is now made!

Not a waste of space always good to talk about polys. Looking forward to seeing the new polys

Yeah, tough decision time.

I have the 300 gallon now but I also have fewer tanks due to the downsize. Going from a 2000 sq ft home down to half that makes it hard to have multiple tanks now. But happier in the long run. Less house to maintain for me and I can focus all energy on the 300g in the living room. Being in the hobby for some years now Ive got a lot of extra stuff to now sell off. I have new in box filters, heaters and things for smaller sized tanks that I will never have, lol. So been trying to sell those off to get some poly money.

Give you a break with corrupting you into more polys. Gotta live through you until i upgrade ;)

The only correct answer is to sell off all your other fish and go full poly!

Over the weekend sold off the smaller upper jaws. No more Delhezi 9", Plamas plamas 8" and Buettikoferi 7.5". So no worry about getting ate, lol.

I only have my weeksii 13"+ and teugelsi 11.5"+ and hopefully an endli coming this Friday. Sized at 13-15", this new fish should be a perfect fit with the larger upper jaws now. I really wanted to keep the delhezi but it was done at 9" and only growth seemed to be around, but even then it had pretty good genes for a cb and did not have the big belly.

I introduced about a 9" lap bichir with a 12" ornate several months back. Ornate had some aggression issues and kept tearing him up for the first month or so, I literally saw her latch onto his tail and make him startle. Bichir are such tough fish though that aside from literally being able to ingest a smaller bichir I don't know if they would actually attack to the point of death. The peeps at the local fish store were amazed that I was keeping more than one in an aquarium, but research told me that these are not really an aggressive fish so I wasn't worried. Eventually they understood each other, and since upgrading to a 125 from a 55 they have had no issues whatsoever. Laps fins look immaculate and ornate... well when I see her she looks amazing. Now with a new baby ornate in my grow out tank I will truly have a good bichir colony started. Truly an amazing fish, I just wish they were as personable as the fire eel is.

Others have not had such good experience especially with ornates. They are one of the more aggressive in the bichir world when it comes to bullying others and sometimes killing smaller polys. Every fish is different but I know of two MFK members who had issues and both were due to ornates. Good to see you are having success.

I think for me the other issue was before I got the two upper jaws I had just purchased an awesome koliba lap. I literally had it for a weekend and it managed to jump out what I thought was a well covered tank. I was a bit gun shy to spend that kind of money again and thus settled for a couple of bichir I really was not wanting. Getting my new tank was the push I needed to get a couple lower jaws and try it again.
