Who uses heat exchangers on their tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would the heat exchanger that use get clog up with debris quickly? I am thinking of setting up something similar with a tankless water heater.

I helped set up a boiler system in a angelfish breeding facility in Ohio. We used the fin tubing from a house boiler to do the job. We put the fin tubes in the sump at the end of a run of tanks on a central system. About 120 - 35 gallon tanks per system, we actually heated 4 systems that big with one boiler.

I'll tell you that using a cast iron pump is not recommended on these open loop systems. There is oxygen in the water which obviously is corroding the cast iron. If you are looking at a setup like this invest in a bronze or stainless pump designed for potable water.

on a side note I have 2 of the main parts (circu pump and heat exchanger) BRAND NEW that I will not be using if anyone is interested.

I have done three setups and have had no issues with clogging or rust.

You just don't see it. Every pump manufacturer will tell you do not use a cast iron pump on an open loop. Only use a bronze or stainless pump on an open loop. To each his own but you will experience premature pump failure compared to the correct pump.

Thanks for the info, I'll be pulling one of them out in the near future to see how bad they are and possibly replace them if rust has taken over.
