Who uses satellite internet?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am located in Sasktchewan and am using the cable company high package at home and at my restaurant I am on the U of R net line.

I will look into high-gain antennas, being that we do get some coverage that might work out. I really am not excited about shelling out money for equipment that will probably be obsolete before too long, so maybe 3G is the way to go if I can get good enough reception with a high-gain antenna. Is wireless service affected by weather? Our satellite TV loses reception during electrical storms and heavy snow, which we get quite a bit of some winters.

Nice, I have Comcast cable internet. Their 50mbps pacakge is $100 a month. Too rich for my blood! Mine will be $50-60 after the promotion is over. They even have a 105mpbs package for $200/month :nilly:

I am assuming on the snow, we don't get any here.
But obviously storms we get a lot of. I imagine they would offer the same effect.

Severe lightning will cause a dropout or two... but nothing like they do for satellite. It lags up a bit, then comes back. With satellite you may as well walk off, and give up on it coming back for a few hours.

Normal weather changes and conditions won't really affect it the same way they do satellite.

^ That sounds like my buddy's internet! Watching Netflix on his tv is a headache, the quality gets so fuzzy when the speeds slow down.

Satellite and dial-up are my only options. We get some cell phone reception, but it is very spotty - I can go from 5 bars to no coverage in a matter of seconds.

That sounds like us. For years, the only time we could use our cell phones was when we were on the road. Cell phone reception at our house is sketchy at best to nonexistent. When I finally upgraded to a smartphone, not being able to use the phone at home was no longer acceptable. I got a wireless network extender from Verizon Wireless, and for the first time ever, we can use our cell phones at home. After you get high speed internet connection, you might check out wireless network extenders.

I thought we lived in a rural area, but at least we have cable here!

Oh rats! I just checked, and this network extender does not work with satelite connection. :(

Dang, too bad. It would be nice to be able to walk around talking on my cell phone - if I move away from the back door I lose service. It is pretty darned rural up here. We are actually very lucky to have some cell coverage, we are one of the few spots in my area that have any service at all. I work at a rural K-8 and most of of our kids don't have any internet at home.

So... not one satisfied satellite internet customer?

I definitely have to research 3G costs and speed for sure. I am going to try and figure out what kind of bit-rate my mom is getting with her Hughes Net and compare to what AT&T offers.

48k is the Max for dial up. If I am remembering right. Look for a wireless internet company using Motorola canopy
