well today I have been very bad! was at the LFS and as always was browsing in all the sump tanks, and then I saw this guy/girl in a mixed american cichlid tank! it was love at first sight! I realise I have probably made a bit of a rash decision, and it will very likely mean having to let go of a lot of my current fish....but I couldn`t help it! I just could not resist!....I had to have this devil/midas! I watched it for a good hour or so in the tank...and also had a look at all the other fish in there to see if there were any particularly battered looking individuals, and to my surprise all was very peaceful! and all the other cichlids in there looked in perfect shape....he/she is around 8in max....and so far all seems pretty ok in my tank, a little bit of chasing but no severe aggression as of yet, I have taken a video and wondered if you could have a go at guessing the sex, I tried my best to get vent shots...

this is the first red devil/midas I have seen in years near me, hence the rather hasty decision....but have already spoken to the guy who I know quite well in there, and he is happy to take any of my current fish on if any major issues occur, or will take the devil/midas back and refund me.

he/she is a lovely rich orange colour...although looks more pale in the pics.

Congrats, awesome fish! That colouration is incredible! :)
IMO that colour is perfect for a midas/RD

If i had to guess, withoit any certainty, i would say it has a malish look

thanks all, and thanks for taking a guess Miguel...

a little update, things are not going too swimmingly now....he/she is starting to lay into the oscars a bit! I am not sure wether to take him/her back....or let the oscars and a few others go, like I say...red devils/midas are not common round these parts at all! so wonder wether I would kick myself for letting this gorgeous guy/girl go....decisions decisions!

thanks very much for all the replies! and going on what I have read I would guess male also....he seems to have a very pointed small tube that protrudes slightly, I have taken the oscars out and given them to my LFS, but I fear I may well end up having to let most of the others go also as they grow, I am hoping the ornate birchir will be able to stay, along with my little jaguar.....and possibly the JD, but from what I am reading this is probably quite unlikely! I have managed to talk the other half into letting me get a larger tank this year, but the largest I can go is 6x2 but hight is no issue....any first hand advice on eventual stocking in something that size would be appreciated, although I am fully prepared for the possibility of him being kept solo.

Good choice you made. Even alone, that bull will make. A showpiece in your tank, as glass banging as any oscar.

Is your jag a male? If so uou can try an all male comm. Get one or thwo males more, of equal personality.

I am not sure on the sex of the jag....he/she is only around 3 inches maybe a tad more, something I would LOVE to keep again is Tilapia buttikoferi, but my last one was just insane! "he" wiped out absolutely anything in "his" tank......yet I see loads of videos of TB`s and Jags and Devils co-existing (seemingly) very peacefully (for highly aggressive cichlids)
