I have 4 RBP in my tank (48"x24"x18") now, but before I got them I had 1, 3.5" Shovelnose Catfish and 10 Seprates Tetras approx 1' in there. The Tetra population would go down every night by 1. This happened for about a week or so untill I had 6 Teras left and before the pirahnas laid claim to their new home. My question is now. Is the Catfish eating the Tetras or are the Teras engaging in some form of canobolism?

For the record I woke up to a shoal of 3 Tetras this morning. The possible good news is that my P's are finally eating something other than krill. The bad news, expensive alternative.

are these fish in the same tank? this isnt a good combo at all. have you done any research on your fish.

how big are the piranhas?

if your catfish is a tiger shovelnose you will soon find out who is eating who. :)

Exactly. Get the catfish out of there asap.

if only people would do some simple research before stocking their tanks...it would save so many problems.

The piranhas are about 3" or so.

As for research. I knew the Tetras would sooner or later become food for the piranhas,
but would look good in the tank in the meantime. I thought the catfish would help clean up any scraps left over from any feedings. Is there a "safer" fish to use for scrap removal? I've read that most fish will end up eaten by the piranhas in the long run, but for the meantime? Crayfish, pleco? Any suggestions? I apologize if this naive on my part.

is the catfish a tiger or lima shovelnose? if it is a tiger it will reach a very large size and def. eat your piranhas. either way p's and tankmates really shouldnt be mixed. i keep large apple snails w/ my big rhom...crayfish may work as well, but ive never tried them.

It's a small tiger right now. Approx 3.5". I'm going to get rid of it as soon as I get in. Hopefully I'll get a credit at my lfs. I'll try some snails.
