It's a small tiger right now. Approx 3.5". I'm going to get rid of it as soon as I get in. Hopefully I'll get a credit at my lfs. I'll try some snails.

my rhom does very well with the snails and they do a pretty good job w/ cleaning up scraps. just be sure to still do your normal water changes...

i think getting rid of the catfish is a very good idea.

Just got rid of the catfish. A beautiful little guy, and picked up acouple of blue snails and a couple of small (1") crayfish. Hopefully that will settle things down.

i'm not sure how the crayfish will do, but the snails should do well. you did the right thing by removing the shovelnose and yes they are a very beautiful fish. good luck with your new tankmates.

I have 4 RBP in my tank (48"x24"x18") now, but before I got them I had 1, 3.5" Shovelnose Catfish and 10 Seprates Tetras approx 1' in there. The Tetra population would go down every night by 1. This happened for about a week or so untill I had 6 Teras left and before the pirahnas laid claim to their new home. My question is now. Is the Catfish eating the Tetras or are the Teras engaging in some form of canobolism?

For the record I woke up to a shoal of 3 Tetras this morning. The possible good news is that my P's are finally eating something other than krill. The bad news, expensive alternative.

Is this a trick question?

The piranhas are about 3" or so.

As for research. I knew the Tetras would sooner or later become food for the piranhas,
but would look good in the tank in the meantime. I thought the catfish would help clean up any scraps left over from any feedings. Is there a "safer" fish to use for scrap removal? I've read that most fish will end up eaten by the piranhas in the long run, but for the meantime? Crayfish, pleco? Any suggestions? I apologize if this naive on my part.

I only keep large common plecos with piranha. plecos got biten most time, but in general, plecos still work for cleaning my tanks, though they poo a lot meanwhile.

Regarding to tiger shovelnose, they do not care piranha or not, they eat everything.

FYI gravel vac works better than plecos for cleaning up scraps...gravel vacs do not contribute to the bio load like a pleco does....crap in ---crap out...

this is the most logical choice and by the time you go through a few tank mates you could have already paid for it...:)

rbp's will eat crayfish,as long as the pleco is twice there size you should be ok

The problem is that you have a school of piranhas so they will eat anything even a larger shovelnose. The second problem is you have to small a tank to try anything other then snails or plecos you might consider expendable. Once they hit 5" with more then 2 fish they are very bold I'm surprised you shovelnose is still alive now you must have hide spots for it. Bottom line NO catfish will work in a multiple Red belly tank. There are videos on youtube showing schols of piranhas eating larger fish.
