who's keeping mayans??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is a pic of my dad's 12 year old female. He bought it when I was just 8 back in 99'. Still have it to this day; it did at one point had a minor case of HITH (Hole In The Head) but now it is long gone and only scars remain. It's around 8 - 9" and has been and always will be kept alone.

i had a pair of Mayans before and they were very good looking fish but also a heighten aggression level that most people don't talk about....
I have never seen a post that said, "SO & SO killed my Mayan", ....I have two at the moment(1 to 2inches) and they are stronger than my devils, mota's, and festae in a 50gal tank,...all the same size.......I bought them at a LFS as festae but soon discovered they were Mayans and am happy about it because I have lots of Festae and now I can see what is what......Cheers...and very nice Mayans you have!!!!!!!

I like mayans--I've never kept them though. It's unfortunate that people often buy them thinking they're festae and now they have a bit of a reputation as the fish you don't want. I mean, they're not festae and if you view them on their own without comparing them to festae then they are a great looking species. Easily one of the most underappreciated species on MFK! :)

I had no clue what mine was when I got it, It would've been cool for it to be a festae but I loved the fish for what it was and it was so personable and interactive.
I kept her with a sajicaxCon hybrid that my turtles failed to kill and let it grow to 4" lol

I grew a 1" one i got for free from a petco of all places. they had idea what it was...i did so they just gave it to me. it reached about 5-6" before i traded it in. no reason wasnt really aggressive just one of my downsizing fits. it was ugly though lol female. i had her with oscars dempseys jade goby flowehorn female midas and she was perfectly fine. chased a bit but never ripped anyone to shreds. i call them the poor mans festae. if ur lucky u can get some amazing colored specimens. right now i have two 2" from the same batch and one is gold and red but the other ir gorgouse orange/gold and red. really surprising. my opion good fish with equally tempered cichlids. but space is important as they get huge and in my experience fast. ive caught them in canals at 13-15" :)

I have a male and female pair in my 120 gallon african cichlid community... they bred a few weeks back, but after a couple weeks doing well, they just abandoned the fry and i was only able to save about 8... not even an inch long, they still look like tadpoles, lol. they do well in the tank, the male is about 9 or 10 inches, the female a couple inches smaller, and the africans range from newborns all the way to about 5".

anyone want pics of my setup?

I have one now. ;)
