should we be keeping these guys in groups so they dont get depressed???

Mine never had a problem eating, but Iwent on vacation and I don't think it was being fed enough and it found a litle crack to jump through where it died!

I had the SAME EXACT thing happened a few weeks ago, except mine ATE the night before..

Wole up at 3 with tail on the bottom and at 8 am, he was dead. I cut him open and swim bladder was red

what the heck?

im gonna try adding my silver w him and see wht happens

i wonder if its a health issue or depressed or somethin

wht does a red swim bladder mean?

Swim bladder is the organ that maintain the bouyancy and balance. When it's affected, the fish are no longer able to maintain its balance and bouyancy (sp)

Think of it as part of your brain that allwos you to stand up in balance.

I have kept my black aro for 6 years already and every November, it stops eating for 2-3 weeks. It has always come through every year without problems. It has just finished its fasting this year and is now eating normally again.

Could this be related to the breeding season?

My black is in a community of aros so I donth think its lonely at all

Wow guys!!! Bad Bad string of luck fellas. I don't have a black aro but I do have a couple of silvers that I'm gonna keep a closer eye on. What area of the country have these black aro deaths occured? You guys think it could be caused by the change in seasons? I know tank temps only fluctuate a little bit but what about barametric pressure?

I don't think barometric pressure would affect them, as water is an incompressible* liquid.

*Well, we treat it that way, but it is slightly compressible under tremendous pressure, not the sort you get from the atmosphere.

i was hoping my black was doing the same (just fasting for some reason) but i dont have him w any other aros, i guess it could be a breeding thing....

hope mine starts eating again like yours does

it could have been an internal bacterial infection. like aeromonas hydrophilla or salmonica or similar. there are heaps of different kinds of bacterias in water and if conditions are right for them and wrong for you fish they can win the battle.

those bacterias can take your fish out without any outward signs.
you may either get a surface attack on a wound or vent or under the scale (that looks like dropsy).
the fish can have have it internally before you see a lesion on the outside OR your fish can just suffer internal damage and die that way.

so it may be that the swim bladder looked red but the kidney or liver may have been mush.
bacteria can get to them if the filters arent working well, ie the water goes a bit bad.
it can also explain why they go off food.
that can be a seasonal thing ( lower temps) but if your heating and temp is constant and within the happy fish species temps and good water quality it shouldnt be that.

try recall anything that would have seen the water quality degrade because if water is great, even if you introduced a new bad bacteria to the tank that was somehow never present before,it should not beat your fishes immune system.

though abrasions from rocks or handling can give the bad bacteria an edge.

worldwide these bacterias result in millions of dollars worth of losses on fish farms and it can happen to fish in your tanks just the same.

i know because it near ruined me and it did get to my jar.
there are ways to treat these bacterial infections. it also includes raising temps back to good.
but what to do if you can not see any outward signs? you just dont know..
