Why a weekly 50% WC is better than two weekly 25% WCs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"Old Tank syndrome" is understood.. but not 100%.. we have enough of an idea of the whys and hows of the ammonia/mineral/ect but little knowledge of the entire toxic soup. Again, as usual Nitrates take a less important roll. But are they really so innocent? For all one knows the NItrate levels may control how fast the ammonia toxifies or how it's coverted ect to begin with.

Organic Build-up not debris are similar yet not. For example why do SW tanks run protein skimmers? to "clean up" microscopic organic matter in the water. FW tanks rarely if ever employee a similar technique. Most FW tank owners just do a water change. Syphoning out the debris one can see with the nakid eye is deffinately a good way to avoid excessive nitrification in your tank. But how do you remove the Organics in a FW tank that we can't "pick out"?.. all the end product of the nitrificatoin process in creating Nitrates in a tank.

while your 25% x2 may be inferior on a pure nitrate basis to a 50% WC which one removed more "Toxins" from the water ? I'm guessing your numbers would be the opposite... So the correct answer is..

" You can never do to many water changes" :naughty:

25% every 3 days is better than 50% per week given your bio-load parameter (20PPMs/week or ~3PPMs/day). The nitrate swings are less severe.

50% Weekly WC 20PPM Nitrate per week Bio-load.jpg

25% Every 3 days 20PPM Nitrate per week Bio-load.jpg

Awesome chart and thanks for posting. I have never really monitored my tank at this level but I am going to start this schedule.

I have found this site really easy to navigate since I first joined. You should definitely ease up on calling the creators of this site idiots. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience on here if you take the time to look and read. As you grow up you will realize that everything cannot remain at a 6th grade level. You are derailing a very good thread by the way. Post your concerns in a more appropriate thread.

In concerns of water changes, I perform 50% changes weekly, sometimes a bit more.

50% weekly won't even begin to lower my nitrates - I have some very heavily stocked tanks... :nilly:

I change out roughly 2% per hour with a 50%-80% "flush" every two weeks when I do filter maintenance.

I think that it is hard to pinpoint a percentage that will be optimal for every tank. A very lightly stocked tank can probably be fine with 25% per week or less, while a heavily stocked tank might need well over 50% per week in water changes. In my view a constant-flow water change is better than weekly or bi-weekly changes, it keeps water parameters nice and stable.

Ive got a High bioload and my tank still sets fine at a 25% biweekly. I think every tank is different and you just have to find what works for you. But great info on this forum!

I don't get bogged down with all this science-y stuff. I just know that water changes are good for my fish because they live in closed system. therefore I do as much as i can as often as i can.
