You know seriously though I think since the question was asked. I should be able to ask this- I thought this was suppose to be fun for everyone? Where did all the fun go in this fourm? -
I have had a ball learning all about the different types of cichla and such,I wish we could get back to those day's before it took a turn for the worse.
Channa it's all money and all demand man. As long as there is someone looking for Cichlids not just Cichla there is someone selling them. Even if they sell you fake Cichlids people are still going to inquire about them and buy them. Period. As far as i know the ORIGINAL people that were demanding Azul/Kelberi that wanted to get a hold of any of these cichla are still in possesion of there much sought after prizes. All these new names that are selling Cichla I had never seen in the past so there irreliavant if you ask me. I only say this because what is the quality of a Cichla that was kept in the improper condition's and then sold to the next improper Cichla enviroment? Probably not something you want to buy anyway? Right? imo....

C. piquiti was banned for a good while and the only ones you'd see in the hobby were adults circling from owner to owner for a good while. Which added to the commotion when Rich brought some in. FIrst group in a LONG time. Who else has brought them in recently?
This was the case with Kelberi. Ive always found them to be glorified Mono's. Not that I don't like them, I have a couple...but there was a time you werent going to get one for less thatn $500. Suddenly they flood the market and you can get them for $35.
In the end it will come down to taste. Look up some of DM's old pics of his full grown Zullie. Can't top that in my eyes....Check out his old breeder pair of Orino's. Probably some of the nicest cichla you'll ever see...but many owners shrug O's off because they arent 'as rare'.
Same with Armatus, Dats, etc.
As for housing...same requirements IMO. That some will keep them in less than that...no doubt.
Agree with superlaz. I don't think a gatf is a different story as far as tank size needed vs. cichla. Both require similar sized tanks at adult sizes. Especially for those keeping more than a few cichla.
Agree.. Not sure about $50.00 but lower prices on everything that the masses like are sure to happen. It's the way this hobby works and why fish are a horrible investment of money. Look at gulper cats, leichardti's, endli's, etc. Ask R1, unknownuza13, etc what they were paying for gatf/armatus a few years ago.

People are whatever you make them out to be. IMO he was just a really cool individual. Not ego centric. This hobby is so much bigger than MFK. There are people who don't get on MFK that I know have collections like
. How long has Rick Perez been in the cichla game, he has 4th gen cichla? Not to mention the others who have never been in a magazine or shared their collections with general public. This is not to say R1's tank isn't beautiful. It is. But it's hard to name a king when there's so much you guys haven't seen.
I credit R1 for saying this before. But in the end you have to be happy with what you're keeping. I think alot of people get caught up in hype of the forums, friends, etc and just buy what everyone else likes thinking they like the same and find out that doesn't make them happy.
If that means you have to buy/sell a little to find it then so be it. It enables fellow hobbiests to pick up fish that they otherwise might not have the ability to pickup if hobbiests weren't selling them.

Did i once tell people what to keep? I could care less if every person keep's bass.. I was just saying what i think. Right or wrong time will tell. And i've been asking for Goliath's from Rich for quite some time.. With no luck as of yet. Wes, Is the man for the ATF's.. So far, And they run $225.00 i think last time.. I dout Shaq had his foot in his mouth, He was to busy counting Money.
